We're Often Asked
Our hours are Mon – Fri from 8am – 4:30pm. We do not work Saturdays or Sundays.
The Maid Crew does NOT require a contract or commitment (even if you want recurring service). We feel that our work should speak for itself. If you’re happy, you’ll keep us around. If you’re not happy, we’ll do what we can to make things right. If our best efforts fail, we’ll thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Deadline for canceling or rescheduling is 48hrs+ prior to a client’s appointment. Cancellations or reschedules submitted with LESS THAN 48hrs notice results in a $75 late-cancellation fee.
You do not need to be home during the cleaning. We typically clean while folks are at work. On the flip side, if you are going to be home, that’s okay too… we’ll just work around you.
Some clients will hide a key or leave a door unlocked on the day of service or provide us with a code for keyless entry through a door or garage. We have realtor lock-boxes we can make available at cost for $20 a box if you’d like to go that route. Although we can keep keys on file we prefer not to for multiple reasons. Exceptions can be made however if your home is within in a condo building which requires key-access through multiple security doors.
We love Pets (unless they’re aggressive)! Pets help to break up the monotony or normal routine of our day. Just let us know their name(s) and if there are any special instructions we need to be aware of, such as where treats are kept, if they’re allowed outside, etc.
For a complete list on what you can expect, please visit our Details page.
Tipping is neither required nor expected, but it is greatly appreciated by the Crew and a great way of saying “Thanks”. 100% of tips go directly to the Crew that provided the cleaning. If tipping, we recommend cash in a marked envelope (otherwise it’ll be viewed as you just left money lying around). Since we do not accept checks, the only other option for tipping is to call or text us in the office with instructions on how much tip should be added to the final card-charge.
At The Maid Crew, we want to make sure each and every client is happy with the service provided. One of the ways we do that is with a Satisfaction Guarantee. If you’re not happy with a particular aspect of our cleaning, then give us a call or email within 24 – 48 hours of our visit and we’ll come back out to provide a Re-Clean absolutely free.
It is The Maid Crew’s policy not to provide discounts or refunds once Time & Labor has been rendered. Instead of discounts or refunds, we offer clients the option of a Re-Clean if not completely happy with the quality of the cleaning provided. Conditions apply.

The Maid Crew offers employees the option to work either full-time or part-time. Full-time is defined as working Monday through Friday from 8am until work is complete, which can vary from 2pm to 4:30pm. If an employee only wants to work part-time, The Maid Crew requires that they work a minimum of three days a week and the three days per week must be the same days week after week.
Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: The Maid Crew does not accommodate or offer its employees flex-scheduling like you would find with Uber or DoorDash which allows contractors to turn on/off their availability whenever it suites them. Employees of The Maid Crew will need to make themselves available to work a minimum of three partial or full days per week Monday through Friday and the days they work must be the same days from week to week. Employees must maintain a set, established schedule if they would like for The Maid Crew to provide them with a consistent, reliable volume of work each week.
Employees of The Maid Crew are able to set their own hours of availability with certain conditions.
If you are working in The Maid Crew's Residential House Cleaning division, your hours of availability must align with The Maid Crew's hours of operation, which is Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4:30 pm. Example: if you have children that you need to get onto or off the bus, and you can only work between 9 am to 2 pm, then we would schedule you for and assign you jobs between those hours. NOTE: If you do want or need to set your own hours, you will be required to work as a Crew of One using your own vehicle to get back and forth to the jobs assigned.
If you are cleaning one of The Maid Crew's commercial clients, the hours available for you to work are dictated by the commercial client.
The Maid Crew requires employees to work a minimum of three partial or full days each week.
The Maid Crew has established pay rates based on an employee's position and experience. Here is a breakdown of how much The Maid Crew pays its employees:
Trainee: Paid "per hour" at a rate of $16 per hour for every hour on the clock spent in onboarding, orientation, and training. The number of days spent in training will last between 2 - 5 days, depending on prior professional house cleaning experience, if any. While in training, new-hires are considered "on the clock" from 8 am until they return with their team at the end of the work day, including all morning prep, drive-time, fuel or lunch stops, and end-of-day breakdown.
Junior Partner: Paid "per job" at a rate equivalent to $19 per hour for each hour of labor allocated and allowed for the job.
Example: All jobs are dispatched through a mobile app. If a junior partner opens up a job that is showing up on their schedule, they will be able to see how long (in hours and minutes) the job is estimated to take and what their total pay is for the job. If the mobile app says that the home is estimated to take up to three labor-hours, then the app will show that you will be paid a flat rate of $57 for that job, which represents 3 hours multiplied by $19/hour. If the job only ends up taking you 2 hours and 45 minutes, you will still get paid the $57. If you are running a little slow and you need 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete the job, you will still only get paid $57. This is what getting paid "per job" means.
Senior Partner: Paid "per job" at a rate equivalent to $20 per hour for each hour allocated or afforded for the job.
Team Lead: Paid "per job" at a rate equivalent to $22 per hour for each hour allocated or afforded for the job.
The Maid Crew has broken training down into two parts: Training & Evaluation.
Initial Training: New Hires, as trainees, will be required to go through 2 - 5 days of training, depending on whether or not they have prior house cleaning experience. For those with little to no experience in professional house cleaning, a full five days will be required. For those with experience, 2 - 3 days may be all that's needed, just enough time for us to evaluate whether their pace and quality of work are commensurate with their experience.
Evaluation: After initial training is complete, all new-hires transition to a period of continued evaluation as Junior Partners. During this time, The Maid Crew will continue to have the new-hire working in a team, watching to see if they continue to work well with others, show up to work when scheduled, and continue to show improvement and consistency in their pace and quality of work. A new hire's evaluation phase can last anywhere from 1 - 3 weeks AFTER they graduate from initial training. Once the evaluation phase has run its course, management expects the worker to be able to keep up with their fellow crewmates and provide praiseworthy cleanings, becoming eligible for promotion to Senior Partner, earning $20 per labor-hour.
Promotion: The title and role of Senior Partner are reserved and bestowed only when a worker's pace and quality of work are on par with everyone else's, meaning that they can keep up with the overall pace of the team and that they're pulling their weight, shouldering an equal portion of each job's workload. It is when a worker is elevated to the role of a Senior Partner that they become eligible to work independently as a Solo Worker, taking advantage of customized work hours and going directly from their home to their assigned jobs, skipping the office entirely.
While The Maid Crew has established pay rates for employees based on tenure and experience, opportunities to increase your earnings potential are available. Allow us to explain:
Many clients will offer up tips for a job well done. Provide quality, detailed cleanings while showing yourself as personable and friendly, and clients are likely to provide a tip as a gesture of appreciation.
Additionally, depending on your status as either a part-time or full-time worker, your average monthly ratings score, and your attendance, you could earn additional performance bonuses such as Paid Days Off and Paid Holidays.
With potential tips and bonuses factored in, an employee's earnings potential PER HOUR is estimated at between $19 - $25 per hour spent cleaning. Weekly earnings potential is dependent upon whether an employee is working part-time or full-time. Our full-time workers, if they work five full days in a given week, will typically earn $620 - $780.
Requirements: Working independently as a Crew of One is a privilege reserved for those who have completed training and demonstrated the reliability and skill to deliver thorough, high‑quality cleanings without direct supervision from a Team Lead. Attaining the rank of Senior Partner is the benchmark for having met this requirement.
Greater Autonomy & Flexibility: Solo Cleaners enjoy more independence and flexibility than team members. Instead of reporting to the office each morning, they may travel directly from home to their first appointment and return home once their last job is complete. The only times a Solo Cleaner is required to come into the office are for scheduled company meetings or when restocking supplies and chemicals.
Workload & Scheduling: Solo Cleaners are typically assigned 1–2 houses per day (ideally one in the morning and one in the afternoon). This lighter schedule means less drive-time between jobs and fewer total work hours compared to working on a team. Teams, in contrast, usually cover 3–5 houses per day, requiring more driving as well as daily trips to and from the office.
Earnings & Tips: Due to their reduced driving time, Solo Cleaners generally devote fewer hours per week while still earning similar—or slightly greater—pay than team members. Additionally, tips play a significant role in compensation. Solo Cleaners keep 100% of the tips they earn, whereas team tips are split among all members.
Transportation: Those working as Solo Cleaners must use their own vehicle. Company cars are reserved for team use, as they leave from the office each morning.
Performance & Availability: While some employees may prefer to work in a Team with one or two other people, a worker's pace or availability may prevent management from accommodating such a preference.
Quality work at a slower pace: If a worker consistently delivers high-quality, detailed cleanings but at a slower speed than their fellow crewmates, having that worker clean independently in a Crew of One helps prevent teams from falling behind.
Later morning start times: Employees who, due to childcare or school schedules, etc., are not able to start their work day until 8:30, 9:00, or even 10:00 am must work solo, since teams cannot be forced to wait around for late-arriving teammates.
All employees of The Maid Crew are hired with the understanding that:
Why a Personal Vehicle is Necessary:
Mileage reimbursement is paid to all eligible employees at a rate of 25¢ per eligible mile. Mileage reimbursement is not awarded to subcontractors since they can claim their own mileage deduction on their taxes. Here are some things to know about eligibility:
NO company pays its employees mileage to get to work in the morning nor to get home after work. With that in mind, if you are working as a Solo Cleaner, The Maid Crew does not pay mileage when workers drive from their home to the first job of the day nor does it pay mileage to employees driving home from their last job of the day. The only mileage reimbursement paid is for miles or distance driven BETWEEN jobs throughout the day.
The Maid Crew has its own company vehicles which are used by teams to get to & from the jobs throughout the day. Those working in a team are required to show up at our office at 8am when scheduled and work in a team with 1-2 other people. Crews are tasked with keeping the gas tank filled by stopping off for fuel at WaWa when needed and using the company's WaWa fleet gas card to fill-up. This is usually done in the morning on the crew's way to their first job. Crew's also use this time to grab their morning coffee, snacks, breakfast items, etc.
Service Area & Travel Expectations
The Maid Crew’s service area extends up to about a 30‑minute drive in any direction from our main office at 7137 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA 23228. We do not accept clients outside this radius.
Whether working solo or on a team, you will never be asked to travel more than 30 minutes in one direction. Routes are carefully planned so that if you do have a job located at the edge of our service area, the remaining stops on your schedule will be along the return path—avoiding unnecessary back‑and‑forth driving.
Whenever possible, schedules are structured to keep jobs located close together (within 5 - 15 minutes of each other), minimizing drive time and keeping routes efficient.
The Maid Crew pays employees per job completed, rather than by the hour. Because of this pay structure, travel or drive-time between jobs is not separately compensated.
Exception for New Hires: During the training period, new hires are paid hourly, which does include travel time. Once training is complete, pay transitions to the per-job basis.
Why we do it this way: Our system is designed to give cleaners flexibility in how they manage their day. For example, if you wish to stop for coffee, grab lunch, or take "the long way around" between jobs, you are free to do so—as long as you arrive at each client’s home within the arrival window shown within the job notes.
In short, management’s focus is on the quality of your cleaning and client satisfaction, not on monitoring your every movement or stop between jobs.
The Maid Crew is a locally owned and operated business based in Richmond, Virginia—not a franchise or branch of a larger company. As a small business, our resources are limited, so we do not currently offer traditional benefits such as health insurance or 401(k) retirement plans. In addition, because many of our team members work part-time or as subcontractors, benefits are not provided.
That said, we do provide a number of perks and incentives to make working with us rewarding and worthwhile:
No Working Nights or Weekends: This is the #1 perk that candidates and employees point to as a reason for wanting to work at The Maid Crew. We get it… No one likes having to work when others are off. Working nights & weekends means missing out on all the barbeques, birthday get-togethers, family outings, weekend trips to the beach…. well, no more. Enjoy & spend your nights and weekends any way you like… just make sure you’re back & ready for work Monday @ 8am.
Paid Days Off: Each Team Member has the ability to earn Paid Days Off bonuses that are awarded based on ratings and performance.
Paid Birthday Off (Full-Time Employees): We all inwardly cherish and anticipate that one day of the year that we get blessed and lavished on by others. It’s YOUR birthday and we’d like to share in honoring you on your special day by paying you to take the day off…. go make some noise!
Holidays Off: The Maid Crew is closed in honor of the following six major federally recognized holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (including Black Friday) and Christmas (including Christmas Eve). PAID Holidays Off .... Holiday pay is available to qualifying employees that meet certain expectations as explained within the employee handbook.
Tips: While we do have some generous clients that love to tip, some clients just need a little extra push to reward your good work. After each cleaning, clients are sent a request to rate the service. They are, at that time, able to offer up a tip as well. The better the cleaning, the more likely or larger the tip.
No… but it definitely helps. Regardless of experience, all new-hires go through a certain degree of training. For those with experience, it’s more about learning how we do things here at The Maid Crew. If you don’t have experience it will probably take you longer to get through training as you’ll have to learn new habits, patterns, tips & tricks of the trade. In the end, what we’re really looking for is someone that’s teachable, reliable, works well with others, is respectful, and who can keep up with their coworkers.
Here are The Maid Crew's basic requirements:
— You’ll need proof of a Work Permit or Social Security Number.
— You’ll need a valid driver’s license that’s not expired nor suspended.
— You need to have a clean DMV record (free of DUIs, DWIs or reckless driving).
— You need to have your own working vehicle to get back and forth to work in.
— You’ll need to pass a drug screening and a nationwide background check.
— You need to be physically fit enough to handle 4 - 6½ hours of house cleaning a day.
We do not typically hire “couples” or friends or siblings with the intent on allowing them to work together as a team. If you were to be hired and YOUR employment works out well and you then refer a sibling, spouse or friend, we would consider their application but would never hire them under the condition that you and they be allowed to work exclusively together.
Appearance Policy
The Maid Crew is committed to equal employment opportunity and does not make hiring decisions based on tattoos, piercings, or other personal appearance factors. We value diversity and individuality in our team members.
At the same time, because our employees interact directly with clients in their homes, we maintain certain professional appearance standards to protect the company’s image and ensure client comfort.
Tattoos: Visible tattoos are permitted. However, tattoos containing imagery or language that could reasonably be considered offensive, threatening, or inappropriate (e.g., promoting violence, hate, obscenity, or a culture of death) must be covered during work hours. If you have such tattoos, as previously mentioned, covering your neck and/or face, then the ability to cover or conceal them will be a challenge and weigh on any hiring decision.
Piercings: Facial piercings are allowed, provided they remain minimal, modest, and are not distracting during client interactions. Piercings that could cause client concern or detract from professional presentation may need to be removed while on the job.
These standards are not about personal judgment but about maintaining professionalism and client trust in a service position where we are being welcomed into people's private homes. Should there be any question over what is allowed based on the standards laid out herein, Management's discretion and ruling will dictate.
Work Hours & Scheduling
The Maid Crew operates Monday through Friday, with jobs scheduled to finish by no later than about 4:30 p.m. That means no night shifts and no regular weekend work—one of the key perks of working with us.
Occasionally, a client may request service outside of these hours (such as a weekend or after‑hours commercial cleaning). In those situations, we simply offer the opportunity to our staff. If you’re interested, you can take the job—but at no point will you ever be required to work evenings or weekends.
Company Attire
All employees of The Maid Crew are provided with two company-branded teeshirts, which must be worn during normal business hours while cleaning and representing the company in front of clients and the general public.
Should an employee need more than two company-branded shirts, each additional shirt is provided at a cost of $15 per shirt.
